Tern the Page is a book club for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers around the world! With the cold winter months ahead, it’s the perfect time to cozy up with a good book and connect with our growing virtual Hog Island community. Each month, we will focus on one book and have one classic book club discussion and one “Meet the Author” session. Our authors each have a special connection to Hog Island, Audubon, or the growing community of birders around the world. This year’s authors include former Hog Island Artists in Residence, Brandon Keim and Rosalie Haizlett, Audubon’s Vice President of Boreal Conservation, Jeff Wells, and Founder of the Feminist Bird Club, Molly Adams!

2025 Tern the Page Books!
Meet the Neighbors by Brandon Keim
Meeting Dates: January 16 (Discussion), January 24 (Meet the Author)
Honeybees deliberate democratically. Rats reflect on the past. Snakes have friends. In recent decades our understanding of animal intelligence has exploded, revealing an animal kingdom bursting with thinking, feeling beings—but the way we relate to wild animals has yet to catch up.
Meet the Neighbors asks: What would it mean if we took these insights onto the landscape?
Weaving in the latest research, Brandon Keim takes us into courtrooms and wildlife hospitals, under backyard decks and into deserts, to meet the philosophers, rogue pest controllers, ecologists, wildlife doctors, and others who are reimagining our relationships to animals and to nature. A beguiling invitation to discover an expanded sense of community and kinship beyond our own species, Meet the Neighbors opens our eyes to the world of vibrant intelligence just outside our doors.

- A celebration of birding and the outdoors
- Examples of how inclusive, affirming, and joyful an activity birding can be
- Awareness of the crucial inclusivity issues facing birding communities today
- Related ideas for radical inclusivity and how to break down barriers around birding for marginalized communities
- Information on the ecological challenges facing birds and all life on earth including habitat loss and warming temperatures
- Actionable steps everyone can take toward environmental justice
- Journaling prompts throughout to offer moments of self-reflection
- Ninety original illustrations from the FBC community
The Feminist Bird Club's Birding for a Better World illustrates how anyone can engage in the universally available activity of birding, and support equity and environmental justice at the same time, making an excellent gift or self-purchase for seasoned birders and beginners alike, as well as for nature lovers, social justice activists, and anyone seeking actionable information about accessibility and inclusivity in the birding community.
Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains by Rosalie Haizlett
Meeting Dates: March 20 (Discussion), March 27 (Meet the Author)
Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains features artist Rosalie Haizlett’s hand-drawn exploration of the region’s smallest creatures and plants--a celebration of biodiversity and an invitation to slow down and appreciate nature’s hidden wonders. It’s also an adventure travel story, the result of Haizlett’s journey throughout the Appalachian peaks, trails, and rivers from Alabama to Maine to Canada. Along the way, Haizlett looks closely at the earth, discovering luna moths, earthstar mushrooms, pickerel frogs, showy orchids, and more.
Exploring national forests, national parks, wildlife refuges, and other public lands, Haizlett met with biologists, ecologists, and rangers to get an insider’s look. Tiny Worlds draws readers into her sketchbook of vibrant colors, textures, and original maps for an unforgettable journey through a treasured mountain range.
